Question: Help! My daughter had her hair highlighted and now it does not match her hairpiece. Do I need to purchase a new color?
No. If your daughter highlighted her hair or if she is a "summer blonde" and her hairpiece now appears too dark, there is a very easy solution. You do not need to purchase a new hairpiece.
Go to Sally's ( or any beauty supply store ) and pick up a "cover crayon" in a shade which compliments your child's natural hair color. This would be the color of her natural hair and NOT the highlights.
Cover Crayons are made by several companies ( our favorite is "Cover Gray" ) and is temporary. Basically, it's a crayon which you stroke into the hair. It washes out easily. Women use these crayons to temporarily cover their roots until they can get to the hairdresser. You are going to use it to temporarily cover those highlights.
Pull your daughter's hair into a pony tail as usual and then stroke the crayon over the highlights. lightly smooth the hair with a soft bristle brush and then spray with hairspray. Attach the hairpiece as usual and the colors will blend great.
After the competition, the crayon strokes will wash out in the shower and her beautiful new highlights will return!
Cover crayons cost about $4.00 to $15.00, depending on the brand you use. "Cover Gray" is the least expensive and in our opinion, the best for this purpose.
Question: Do you suggest cutting or coloring a synthetic hairpiece?
No.
A synthetic hairpiece will not hold hair dye, since the fiber is non-porous. You may get some color residue to stick to the hair, but it will not be the color you planned and you will very likely ruin the hairpiece.
Hairpieces which are human hair can be dyed. Synthetic hair cannot.
We also do not suggest that you cut your synthetic hairpiece. It's best to purchase a synthetic hairpiece that already has the style / length you need.
If you start chopping away at the hairpiece, you will very likely lose the body, wave or shaping that was permanently set into the fiber when it was manufactured. The result could be a shapeless hairpiece which looks as though it has been block-cut.
Once your hairpiece has been cut, you cannot grab a curling iron to hide flaws. The damage is done.
Never use hair dryers, hot rollers or curling irons on synthetic hair. To do so will cause it to melt.
Question: We thought we'd try a large-curl style of hairpiece. We just purchased "Classic Curls" last year and I hate to buy a new hairpiece. Any suggestions?
Absolutely. You can create a loose or large curl style by simply separating and splitting your Classic Curls hairpiece with your fingers. Pull the curls down while spraying with hairspray. If you want fat curls, you can twist two or more ringlets together.
Question: My daughter's hairpiece spent most of the summer under her dresser. Needless to say, it's a mess. Is there anything I can do to restore the curls?
Synthetic hair is not easy to restore once it has been mishandled or mistreated. Depending on how bad it looks, your options may be limited. You may want to consider purchasing a new one.
There are some ways to restore synthetic hair, but it is time consuming and should only be attempted by an adult.
If you can find some of the old-fashioned metal perm rods or curlers, these work best with synthetic hair. If not, your next choice is to use hard plastic rollers which do not have "teeth" and do have a snap cover. Use the smallest plastic rollers you can find.
Synthetic hair is basically plastic. This is why curling it the way you would human hair will not work.
With a toothbrush, smooth a strand of the synthetic hair. Wet the strand if it makes it easier to work with. Use end papers to fold around the tip of the strand. Take your curler or perm rod and curl the strand as you would regular hair.
Once the hair is curled, place the hairpiece in a colander or someplace where water can drip through it and NOT splash.
Boil water in a kettle. When the water has boiled, pour the boiling water over the curler(s). Pour it slowly. ONLY AN ADULT MUST DO THIS !!
The hot water keeps the hair moist, yet bends and shapes the fiber over the curler. The old metal rollers work best because they maintain the heat from the inside of the curl.
Let the boiled water run through the hair. The hairpiece should not be allowed to soak in the water. Only pour the water over the hair that is in rollers.
Allow the hairpiece to air-dry naturally. Do not use a hair dryer. Leave the rollers in as long as you can. When completely dry, unwind the curls in a downward spiral.
